Silk Weaving

Since ancient times, Syria has been known for its textile industry in general and silk weaving in particular. This craft has distinguished the Syrian people for centuries. When we mention the words “brocade” or “Damascus,” for example, the name Damascus immediately comes to mind.

There are two types of natural silk

Cultivated silk: Silk is produced from silkworms that feed on mulberry leaves.

Wild silk (tossa): Produced from silkworms that feed on oak leaves.

Silk threads are woven on looms similar to those used for cotton and wool, known as brocade looms.

Silk can be dyed well with bright dyes before weaving, and some types of silk are dyed after weaving.
