Wood Carving

Wood carving is one of the oldest traditional crafts in Syria, and it is especially famous in Old Damascus. Artisans draw inspiration for the carving patterns from the architectural and artistic heritage of various historical periods, including the Ayyubid, Mamluk, and Fatimid eras.

Materials and Types of Wood:

Mulberry, walnut, olive, sharbīn, meys, juniper, maple, sandalwood, pine, and cypress.

Manufacturing Process:

- Prepare the suitable wood for carving.

- Use a hammer and chisel to engrave patterns and decorations.

- Attach pieces with glue when needed.

- Polish and smooth the surface to enhance the beauty of the carvings and the wood.

Traditional Products: Decorated furniture, tables and chairs, boxes, and some musical instruments such as the oud and daf.

This craft represents an important part of Syria’s heritage, and artisans continue to practice it today, preserving their skill and creativity across generations.
