Damascene Carpets and Rugs

The craft of carpet weaving has existed in Syria for centuries, especially in Damascus, Hama, Aleppo, and Idlib, while rugs were primarily produced in the Syrian deserts and rural areas. This traditional craft relies on animal wool and natural hair, and was practiced in both lowland and mountainous villages.

Carpets are woven on traditional Arabic handlooms, while rugs have their own special looms. Colored wool threads are tied onto warp threads according to a precisely drawn dotted pattern, with each dot forming a fixed knot. The ends are woven into trars to prevent unraveling and ensure durability.

Handcrafted pieces are known for their high quality and beautiful designs, influenced by Ajami and Turkish carpet styles, with rich geometric and floral patterns.

Carpets and rugs were used to cover floors and decorate homes, while rugs were part of daily life in the desert, symbolizing traditional Syrian art and craftsmanship.

Today, this craft is still practiced in rural and heritage workshops, and carpets and rugs are displayed in exhibitions and heritage projects to preserve traditional skills and pass them on to future generations.
